About Susan Applegate
Painter, Muralist, Illustrator, and Arts Educator
Susan Applegate has been making art for over thirty years. While at the University of Oregon's Art Department, she studied painting, printmaking and pottery. Although involved in numerous illustration projects over the years, it has been painting that has most deeply captured her interest. Since early childhood, her love of forests, rivers and the life they support has served to enliven nature's mysteries as a source to creatively mine. Her work has been exhibited throughout Oregon in galleries, colleges, museums and regional art centers.
Today Susan lives in Yoncalla, on the ranch in western Oregon where she was born. There, she paints in a light-filled studio. She occasionally teaches art through the Artist-in-Residency program and has written a book, The Road Home, about her mother's side of the family coming to Oregon during the Great Depression. Her volunteer work includes the Applegate House Heritage Arts and Education and in local and state-wide environmental and conservation efforts.
